We are Rhode Island.

These taxes will harm all of us.

As Americans, we already face higher prices for a broad-based number of goods due to recently imposed Federal policies, Social Security and Medicare cut threats, soaring inflation and an economy that hovers on recession. Are we really going to ask Rhode Islanders to face yet another grocery store tax during such uncertain and volatile times?

At the grocery store alone, we are already experiencing increased prices on household staples such as eggs, beef, fruit, bread, fresh vegetables and canned goods to name just a few.  Must we now add bottled drinks to that growing list?!

This legislation would:

Increase the price of bottle alcohol and non-alcohol beverages, further escalating the cost of Rhode Island grocery bills

Require a producer fee which knowingly gets passed on to the consumer

Gut our small businesses – the backbone of our economy - including convenience and liquor stores by placing them at a severe disadvantage with Massachusetts neighboring businesses which would have a lower tax on these same beverages

“This proposed new tax on bottles is ill-timed and inappropriate at best, highly tone deaf at worst”
